What to Expect in IB Interviews
Investment banking recruiting has become increasingly structured, but it still catches many candidates off guard. Here's what the process looks like in 2026:
The Timeline
- Summer Analyst (Undergrad): Applications open August-September of your junior year. First rounds in September-October. Superdays in October-November.
- Full-Time Analyst: Similar timeline, one year earlier for return offers. Off-cycle recruiting happens January-March.
- Lateral Hires: Year-round, typically 2-4 week process.
Interview Formats
- Phone/Video Screen (30 min): 2-3 technical questions + fit questions
- Superday (3-5 hours): Back-to-back 30-minute interviews with Associates, VPs, and MDs
- Case Study (some firms): 1-2 hour take-home or in-person modeling exercise
The Three Pillars of Preparation
1. Technical Knowledge
You need to be rock-solid on:
- Accounting: Three financial statements and how they link — the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement
- Valuation: DCF, comparable companies, precedent transactions
- M&A: Accretion/dilution, merger models, strategic rationale
- LBO: Basic mechanics, returns analysis, sources & uses
Don't just memorize — understand why. Interviewers will ask follow-ups that require genuine understanding.
2. Behavioral / Fit Questions
Every interviewer will ask some variation of:
- Why investment banking?
- Why our firm specifically?
- Tell me about a time you worked under pressure
- Walk me through your resume
Use the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioral questions. Keep answers under 2 minutes.
3. Market Awareness
Stay current on:
- Recent M&A deals (especially those your target firm advised on)
- Current market conditions (interest rates, IPO market, M&A volume)
- A specific sector you can speak to intelligently
Top Mistakes Candidates Make
- Memorizing without understanding: If you can't handle follow-ups, memorized answers backfire
- Ignoring fit questions: Technical skills get you the interview; fit/culture questions get you the offer
- Not doing mock interviews: Reading guides is necessary but not sufficient — practice out loud
- Generic "Why IB?" answers: "I like finance and want to work hard" won't cut it
- Failing to research the specific firm: Know their recent deals, culture, and what makes them different
