    Fraction–decimal conversion · Interview Question

Convert 7/8 and 5/16 to decimals instantly. Why memorize the eighths/sixteenths table for timed rounds?

    How to answer

    7/8 = 0.875, 5/16 = 0.3125. Anchor on 1/8 = 0.125 and 1/16 = 0.0625, then scale: 7×0.125 = 0.875; 5×0.0625 = 0.3125. Memorizing the powers-of-two fractions removes division under time pressure.

Key idea: 1/8 = 0.125 and 1/16 = 0.0625 are the base units; multiply up.
